Overview
Decades of supervising new and experienced psychotherapists has shown how difficult we all find translating what we learn in the books and lectures of our training programs into the consulting room. This results in us feeling like an imposter, making things up as we go along but never sure what we are doing is correct or actually helpful. This puts us at risk for piling up endless credentials or finding a guru to believe in as we search for a feeling of security and competence in our work. During this four-part series, Lou will attempt to share with you his view of the foundation aspects of therapy that will apply to any form of therapy you use in your practice.
This Webinar series will focus on the following core aspects of the therapeutic process; The person of the therapist, the therapist-client connection, creating a case conceptualization and understanding and working with resistance. We will use a combination of in-class therapeutic demonstrations, panel discussions, question and answer sessions, readings and lectures to achieve our learning goals.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn to:
- Transcend the idea of being perfect and stop feeling like an imposter
- Make good mistakes
- Appreciate and utilize not knowing the answers
- Understand the impact of their history on what they bring to the consulting room
- Better appreciate, identify and work with countertransference
- Learn the technique of shuttling between body and mind and between client and self
- Understand the connection between shame, perfection and self-care
- Identify, understand and work with resistance
Target Audience
This course is suitable for counselors, psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, family therapists, students and anyone interested in attachment, trauma, addiction or neuroscience.
Webinar 1 | The Person of the Therapist
The first webinar will explore what leads us to become a therapist and the personal struggles we bring with us to the consulting room. Key concepts are core shame, the longing for perfection, and how to convert our imperfection and ignorance into therapeutic strengths.
Webinar 2 | The Therapist-Client Connection
In webinar 2, we will focus on our physical, emotional and cognitive experience in the consulting room. One central aspect will be an awareness of the activation, identification and processing of countertransference. Another key is an increasing ability to learn to be more tuned into yourself and your client through the technique of shuttling.
Webinar 3 | Creating a Case Conceptualization
Creating a Case Conceptualization will explore organizing the information you glean from your client to create a model of the origins and treatment of their psychological challenges. This involves applying a theoretical model to what you have learned and developing a treatment plan to serve as an ongoing (and updatable) guide through the therapeutic process.
Webinar 4 | Understanding and Working with Resistance
In the final webinar of the series, we will discuss the origins, nature and value to the client of a variety of different forms of resistance. We will explore various manifestations of resistance, the countertransference they can trigger, and various strategies for helping a client become aware of and with overcoming resistance.
